RECYCLING
The Importance of Recycling in Turks & Caicos
It is vital to recycle in Turks and Caicos because we are a small island community with a limited landfill. There are also major environmental impacts of a landfill; a landfill produces a liquid called leachate, which contaminates the ground and eventually the marine environment.
Tourism is key to the sustainability of this country, and what attracts the tourists is our beautiful water. Therefore, is imperative that we continue to keep this island “Beautiful by Nature” thru recycling.

How to Recycle?
Separate the recyclable materials (bottles, cans, cardboard) from the food and liquid waste. Put recyclables in the blue bin we provide, and leave by the curb for weekly pickup.
Why Recycle?
Recycling conserves resources:
When we recycle, used materials are converted into new products, reducing the need to consume natural resources. If used materials are not recycled, new products are made by extracting fresh, raw material from the Earth, through mining and forestry.
Recycling helps conserve important raw materials and protects natural habitats for the future:
It is crucial for Turks and Caicos to preserve our natural habitats, particularly our marine life and coral reefs.
Recycling saves energy:
Using recycled materials in the manufacturing process uses considerably less energy than that required for producing new products from raw materials – even when comparing all associated costs, like transport.
Recycling helps protect the environment:Recycling reduces the need for extracting (mining, quarrying and logging), refining and processing raw materials all of which create substantial air and water pollution. As recycling saves energy it also reduces greenhouse gas emissions, which helps to tackle climate change.
Recycling reduces landfill:
When we recycle, recyclable materials are reprocessed into new products, and as a result the amount of rubbish sent to landfill sites reduces. This is crucial for an island country such as Turks and Caicos.
